Charalambos Charalambous, Director of the Office of the President of Cyprus, has resigned in the wake of a controversial video that sparked political debate over alleged shadow financing of an electoral campaign.

The resignation was accepted by President Nikos Christodoulides amid growing public and political scrutiny. In a social media post, Charalambous explained that he stepped down to prevent his position from being “instrumentalized” and to prioritize the stability, credibility, and transparency of the government.

Charalambous described the video as selectively edited and misleading, claiming it was used to target both him personally and President Christodoulides, aiming to undermine the administration and the country’s image domestically and internationally.

Emphasizing the importance of transparency, he stated that his primary duty was to protect the office of the President, the government, and Cyprus itself during a period when the nation requires “clear political discourse and stability.”
