Cyprus is set to receive a significant boost to its defenses as France prepares to send anti-air and anti-drone systems, along with a frigate, in response to recent drone attacks on British military bases on the island. A second French frigate is also expected to be deployed in the near future.
The announcement follows direct communications between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and French President Emmanuel Macron. Christodoulides had two phone conversations with Macron on Monday, during which he requested additional defense support for Cyprus. President Macron confirmed that France would provide the requested systems and the first frigate immediately.
In parallel, Christodoulides contacted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to request the deployment of a German frigate to the island. According to officials, Merz responded positively, with a final decision from the German government expected shortly.
The move comes amid heightened regional tensions and underlines the strategic importance of Cyprus, particularly after drone incursions targeting British military installations. With European partners stepping in to strengthen the island’s air and maritime defense capabilities, authorities aim to prevent further incidents and ensure security in the eastern Mediterranean.
