Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, Italian media reported.

He had been staying at home for several months following a hospitalization that was not made public. In recent weeks, although unable to attend fashion shows in person, he continued to oversee rehearsals via Facetime, reviewing looks and organizational details until the very end. In the days before his death, he was working on a show scheduled for September 28, meant to celebrate his 50-year career.

A towering figure in fashion and a global icon of modern style, Armani’s legacy is considered unique and enduring.

Armani’s success was not limited to menswear. In 1976, he introduced his first women’s collection, winning over women with the effortless elegance and timeless refinement of his designs.

His popularity soared in the 1980s, when the “power suit” became a symbol of success and dynamism, boosted by the film American Gigolo, for which he designed most of the costumes.

He was awarded the titles of Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica and Grand’Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica, and in 2008, he received the French Legion of Honor medal.
