Greece’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional energy hub was at the center of a meeting between Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and the United States Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, held at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The meeting took place in a warm atmosphere and focused on the deepening energy cooperation between Greece and the United States, which both sides described as a key pillar of economic development, regional stability and national security.
In a statement following the talks, Papastavrou described 2025 as a turning point for Greece, citing energy agreements that significantly upgrade the country’s role within Europe’s energy architecture. According to the minister, these agreements are already being implemented and are expected to attract investment, generate public revenue, create high-quality jobs and strengthen Greece’s geopolitical position.
He highlighted recent developments in the hydrocarbons sector, including the country’s first exploratory drilling in four decades, carried out by international and Greek energy companies, as well as broader cooperation with US firms. Papastavrou also referred to the operation of key energy corridors and wider regional initiatives that aim to enhance cooperation in energy and security.
Looking ahead, the minister said that 2026 would be crucial for turning agreements into concrete results, stressing that continued cooperation is essential for peace and growth in the wider region. He also thanked the US ambassador for her personal support of the energy projects underway in Greece.
Ambassador Guilfoyle, for her part, underlined that energy lies at the core of US–Greece relations. She described energy not only as a driver of economic growth but also as a foundation of national security. Referring to a recent international energy conference co-organized with the Greek ministry, she noted the strong participation of public and private sector leaders from across Central and Eastern Europe, as well as a record number of senior US government officials.
The ambassador praised Greece’s leadership in energy matters and said its strong economic outlook, contribution to regional stability and commitment to conflict resolution would further enhance its role as a regional energy hub in 2026. She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Greece as a gateway for diversified and secure energy routes to Europe.
