Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov outlined Moscow’s conditions for a future peace settlement in Ukraine, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The talks raised the prospect of a trilateral format that could also include Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Lavrov said Russia remains committed to efforts aimed at resolving the conflict, whether through bilateral or trilateral frameworks. However, he stressed that any leader-level meetings must be carefully prepared and not staged for “evening news shows” or media spectacle.

Appearing on the state broadcaster Rossiya 24, Lavrov insisted that lasting peace cannot be achieved without addressing Russia’s security concerns and the rights of Russian and Russian-speaking communities in Ukraine. “Without full respect for Russia’s security interests and the rights of Russians and Russian speakers, there can be no long-term settlement,” he said, adding that these issues must be resolved urgently to tackle the root causes of the conflict.

Lavrov also drew a sharp contrast between the approaches of the United States and Europe. He praised President Trump and his team, citing the recent U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, where he said Washington showed a genuine desire to achieve a “long-lasting, reliable, and sustainable” outcome. By comparison, he criticized European leaders, accusing them of focusing solely on securing a ceasefire while continuing to provide weapons to Ukraine.

According to Lavrov, Russia does not rule out any format for peace negotiations and remains open to multiple frameworks. Still, he emphasized that such talks should pursue meaningful results rather than serve as platforms for short-term political appearances.
