Skoda Auto Marks 30 Years of the Octavia

Nearly 7.9 million units have rolled off production lines across three decades since the model's launch

Skoda Auto is celebrating 30 years of the modern-era Octavia, which entered production on September 3, 1996. Since then, the model has played a central role in the company’s development in Mladá Boleslav, especially after joining the Volkswagen Group, combining quality and practicality with the Group’s proven technology. Today, the fourth generation of the Octavia, the brand’s best-seller, is built in Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny, and Kostanay, Kazakhstan. Nearly 7.9 million units have been built over the three decades.

Skoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer said the Octavia has stood as an iconic model for the brand for three decades. Whether as a Combi or a Liftback, he said, it has consistently delivered what customers value most: excellent space, practicality, safety, and rich equipment at a strong value-for-money ratio. He added that the Octavia has, in many ways, embodied Skoda’s ambition to offer more than expected, earning the trust of generations of customers and driving the company’s international growth. As Skoda continues to evolve and expand into new categories, he said, the Octavia remains a powerful symbol of customer-focused innovation and the brand’s Simply Clever philosophy.

Reviving a Historic Name

The decision to revive the historic Octavia name, originally used on a model produced from 1959 to 1971, came as part of the development of a new car. Work began in 1992, a year after Skoda Auto joined the Volkswagen Group. Access to the Group’s technology helped shape a practical car, designed by Dirk van Braeckel, then Skoda’s Head of Design. At the same time, a new production plant in Mladá Boleslav raised annual capacity from 90,000 to 350,000 vehicles.
