Three tourists were injured on Sunday, May 17, in Menorca, Spain, after part of a building’s balcony suddenly collapsed and fell onto them while they were seated at a café in the island’s historic Ciutadella area.
Among the injured are two Greek women, aged 37 and 38, and a 65-year-old British woman. Authorities say all three were hospitalized and are in stable condition, with injuries including head trauma and minor fractures. Despite the shock of the incident, their lives are not believed to be in danger.
The accident occurred at Plaça Nova in Ciutadella as the visitors were enjoying breakfast at a local establishment. Without warning, a decorative cornice and section of the balcony structure gave way, crashing down onto the terrace below.
Emergency services, including ambulances and local police, arrived within minutes. The injured received immediate first aid at the scene before being transported to Hospital Juaneda for further treatment.
Police cordoned off the area as firefighters worked to secure the building’s façade and clear debris.
According to local authorities, the 112 emergency service received the alert at around 11 a.m. “Three people who were on the terrace of a business were injured and taken to hospital in uncertain condition. Emergency services responded immediately,” the municipal statement said.
Officials added that several police units already nearby reached the scene in under a minute. The city council has expressed its support for the victims and wished them a swift recovery, while an official investigation has been launched into the cause of the structural failure.
