What began as jubilant celebrations over Paris Saint-Germain’s historic UEFA Champions League win descended into widespread unrest across France, leaving two people dead, hundreds arrested, and dozens injured, authorities said Sunday.

According to France’s Interior Ministry, at least 559 people were arrested, 491 of them in Paris alone, as large crowds gathered late Saturday to mark PSG’s 5–0 victory over Inter Milan — a result that secured the club’s first-ever Champions League title.

Violence and vandalism erupted in several locations during the night. In central Paris, revelry on the Champs-Élysées turned volatile, with supporters clashing with riot police. Officers deployed tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons to disperse the crowd after bus shelters were smashed, cars were set on fire, and projectiles thrown at security forces.

Across the country, more than 200 vehicles were burned, and the Interior Ministry reported hundreds of fires. At least 22 members of the security forces and seven firefighters sustained injuries during the unrest.

Tragedy also marked the night. In the southwestern town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during an altercation, local media reported. Separately, in Paris, a 23-year-old man riding a scooter was killed after being struck by a vehicle, according to the city’s prosecutor’s office.

A massive police presence, including 5,400 officers deployed across Paris, had been mobilized ahead of the final, anticipating large gatherings. Despite efforts to maintain order, the situation escalated quickly following the final whistle.
