Madonna is marking her 68th birthday in Greece, choosing Corfu for a discreet luxury escape as the Ionian island joins a growing list of Greek destinations attracting some of the world’s most recognizable celebrities this summer.
The pop icon arrived on the island on Aug. 11 aboard a private flight, accompanied by family members and close friends, according to reports. She was subsequently taken to a luxury villa in northern Corfu, reportedly equipped with a private marina and yacht for excursions around the island.
Determined to keep a low profile, Madonna has gone largely incognito, using a scarf, hat and oversized sunglasses to avoid photographers and public attention.
She is expected to celebrate her birthday on Sunday, Aug. 16, with an intimate party attended by her children and close friends. Reports indicate that Corfu may be only the first stop on a longer Greek holiday, with the island of Patmos reportedly next on her itinerary.
Madonna’s arrival adds another major name to an increasingly international summer guest list.
Former NBA superstar Michael Jordan, the unofficial “GOAT” of pro basketball, began his Greek island holiday in Mykonos before continuing aboard his 75-meter superyacht to Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea, where he was seen in Fiskardo with his wife, Yvette Prieto. His Greek itinerary followed a visit to Corfu the previous year.
Oscar-nominated actress Kate Hudson returned to Skiathos for her annual family getaway, sharing images from the Sporades island with her fiancé, Danny Fujikawa, and her three children. Her recurring visits have made the island something of a family summer base.
The Cyclades isles have also remained firmly on the celebrity map.
Italian fashion influencer Chiara Ferragni visited Milos and Kimolos in June, sharing images of the islands’ volcanic landscapes, fishing villages and beaches with her millions of followers.
Emily Ratajkowski likewise included Greece in her summer travels, sharing images from the country while spending time with French-Greek filmmaker Romain Gavras. The pair had previously attracted attention during a visit to Athens, underscoring how the capital and the islands are increasingly forming part of the same celebrity itinerary.
Tennis star Novak Djokovic chose the Athenian Riviera for a family celebration in June, organizing a drone show for his wife Jelena’s birthday.
Greece’s appeal to international stars is therefore extending well beyond the familiar Mykonos-Santorini axis. From Corfu and Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea to Skiathos, Milos and Kimolos in the Aegean, celebrities are increasingly using the country’s islands as private retreats, cruising destinations and backdrops for carefully curated glimpses of summer life.
