The last weekend of carnival in Greece will see celebrations and revelry in numerous locations around the country, with one of the more unique events of the season being the annual women’s carnival in the northwest coastal city of Preveza.

This year women masqueraders and paraders were accompanied by stilt walkers in costume strolling down the city’s main street.

The women’s carnival of Preveza, a tradition dating back to the 1960s, continues to give the coastal city its unique, unmistakable rhythm.

This year, more than 1,000 merrymakers filled the streets on Thursday with a distinctive “feminine flair” that makes this carnival unique.

Floats, groups, colors, music, and satire that cleverly and sharply critiqued current affairs created a carnival-like atmosphere.

The carnival banner this year was carried by Greece’s racewalking champion, Chara Gerou, providing a symbolic message of strength, endurance, and consistency.
