Contemporary Greek art takes the global stage through the Google Arts & Culture platform which introduces international audiences to iconic works, visionary artists, and the institutions that shape Greece’s modern artistic landscape.

The “Greek Art Now” project features more than 60 digital stories and 1,800 high-resolution artworks curated from the collections of three Greek museums. Visitors to the platform can view impressive digitized artworks, go on virtual museum tours, or participate in interactive experiences such as completing digital puzzles of famous Greek art works: all offering a comprehensive journey into Greek art history from the 19th century to the present.

Greece Google ArtThe project was recently presented at  the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens (EMST) in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

“Culture holds a distinct position and role in the country’s national digital strategy,” said Minister Mendoni. She went on to add that in its 14 years, Google Arts & Culture has helped preserve and promote cultural heritage through nonprofit cooperation with global institutions. “The result fully justifies the goals we set when starting this partnership,” she said.

Also speaking during the event, Peggy Antonakou, Google’s Regional General Manager for Southeastern Europe, said the collaboration “highlighted the importance of making contemporary Greek art accessible to all, eliminating barriers of geography and time through the power of technology”.

During a panel discussion on new technologies and digital innovation and its role the promotion of the arts, Prime Minister Mitsotakis referred to Greece’s dynamic cultural scene. “Greece has a very vibrant, modern, and contemporary artistic heritage,” he said. “Convincing the world that Greece is not only about its glorious past, but also about its creative present and future, has always been a key priority of our cultural policy.”

The project was launched in partnership with the Greek Culture Ministry and the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, EMST, and the Metropolitan Organization of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus).

“Greek Art Now” is available on the Google Arts & Culture platform and can be accessed via the app on Android and iOS devices, bringing Greece’s modern masterpieces to art lovers around the world.
