‘New Realms’ By Maria Kritikou Sees Athens Differently

Art Zone 42 hosts a free solo exhibition presenting immersive paintings that blend organic forms, dreamlike imagery and spiritual interpretations of nature in a dynamic visual experience

Athens audiences will have the opportunity to explore a vivid new artistic universe this month as artist Maria Kritikou presents her latest solo exhibition, New Realms, at Art Zone 42.

Opening on May 22nd, the free exhibition invites visitors into a transformative visual landscape where organic forms, aquatic elements and imagined environments merge in constantly evolving compositions. Through energetic and expressive painting, Kritikou seeks to redefine the relationship between nature, imagination and inner human experience.

According to art historian Evangelia Kairaki, Kritikou’s work is characterized by an “intensely interactive and energetic relationship with the canvas,” drawing parallels with the philosophy of Action Painting. Rather than aiming for realistic depictions of the natural world, the artist embraces a more spiritual and symbolic interpretation of visible reality.

Kairaki notes that Kritikou moves freely within expansive and undefined spaces, where landscapes and living forms undergo radical transformation. The paintings combine dreamlike imagery with a Taoist-inspired perspective, creating a dialogue between the external environment and the spiritual dimensions of human existence.

The opening event will take place on Friday, 22 May, from 20:00 to 22:30 at Art Zone 42. The exhibition will run through 30 May.
