Champagne belongs in fine-dining restaurants, alongside oysters, seafood towers and elaborate tasting menus. At least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
But what if the world’s most prestigious sparkling wine pairs just as naturally with a smashed burger, a late-night souvlaki or a slice of pizza?
That is the idea behind Punk Champagne on Tour 2026, a three-stop culinary event in Athens that aims to take Champagne out of formal dining rooms and into the city’s streets, pairing renowned labels from France’s Champagne region with some of Greece’s favorite comfort foods.
Because while Champagne may be synonymous with luxury, celebration and special occasions, its crisp acidity and lively bubbles have long made it an ideal match for salty, fried and richly flavored foods—the dishes people crave after a long day or share with friends before a night out.

For those who have never considered the combination—or dismissed it as borderline sacrilegious—the event promises a chance to rethink everything they thought they knew about Champagne.
From royal courts to street food
Champagne’s reputation as a drink of refinement dates back centuries. Beginning in the 17th century, French royalty helped transform the sparkling wine of the Champagne region into a symbol of status and prestige, spreading its popularity among Europe’s aristocracy.
Since then, Champagne has become closely associated with formality, tradition and celebration. It is served chilled, poured into elegant glasses and reserved for life’s milestone moments.
But the organizers of Punk Champagne believe it is time for the iconic sparkling wine to loosen its collar.

The concept was tested successfully last year at a popular steakhouse in the Athens suburb of Kifissia, where guests discovered that premium Champagne paired surprisingly well with familiar street-food favorites such as pizza, burgers and souvlaki. The response was enthusiastic enough to inspire a larger and more ambitious edition in 2026.
This year, chef Agapi Micheli decided to take the project beyond a single venue and into the neighborhoods of Athens, partnering with some of the city’s most beloved food spots.
Three stops, three pairings
The first stop takes place on Wednesday, June 10, at Smash n’ Bun in Kolonaki, widely regarded as Athens’ first smash-burger restaurant.

Starting at 7 p.m., guests with a €35 ticket will be served the venue’s signature Teddy’s Burger—made with a potato bun, beef patty, pickles, iceberg lettuce, tomato, organic cheddar and the restaurant’s signature sauce—alongside fries and three glasses of Louis Roederer Champagne.
Dessert will come from Maraboo, a popular local ice cream spot, while music will set the tone for what organizers envision as more than a tasting event.
The goal, they say, is to create a party: a gathering place for people who love food, wine, flavor and authenticity.

Ten days later, on June 20, the tour moves to the historic Varvakios Market in central Athens. There, Volvi, known for serving one of the city’s most authentic versions of souvlaki—the classic Greek street-food staple of grilled meat wrapped in pita—will pair its signature offering with three glasses of Perrier-Jouët Champagne.
The tour’s final stop arrives on June 30 on the rooftop of the Mosaicon hostel in downtown Athens, where the popular PAF Athens has set up for the summer season.

Against a backdrop of Acropolis views, guests will enjoy handmade Neapolitan-style pizza paired with Pommery Royal Brut Champagne. The atmosphere, organizers promise, will be relaxed, carefree and entirely free of pretension.
Celebrating freedom, flavor and fun
With music, dancing and plenty of bubbles, Punk Champagne on Tour 2026 is designed as a celebration of spontaneity and simple pleasures—an invitation to experience Champagne outside the settings where it is usually found.
Its motto says it all: “Bubbles, beats and street eats.”
The only thing left to do is raise a glass.
