With just 11 days left until the deadline, taxpayers in Greece must act fast to submit their asset declarations (POTHEN) for the years 2022 and 2023.
The deadline, which was extended due to technical issues on the platform, expires on February 28, 2025.
The government has introduced a new digital platform that streamlines the declaration process by automatically filling in basic taxpayer details and integrating financial data from banks.
To file their declarations, taxpayers must log into the www.pothen.gr platform using their TAXIS codes. The system automatically displays pre-registered personal and financial information. Assets such as real estate, bank accounts, vehicles, and loans exceeding €5,000 will be transferred into the declaration automatically.
While the platform helps simplify submissions, it does not eliminate the risk of errors. Many fields still require taxpayers to manually verify and complete crucial information, including income, deposits, assets, and how they were acquired. Even if these details were declared in previous years, they must be re-entered to ensure compliance. Mistakes or omissions could lead to increased scrutiny from tax authorities, including possible audits by the Third Unit for the Control of Asset Declarations and the Authority for Combating Money Laundering.
A key feature of the new system allows taxpayers to submit an initial declaration by the deadline and amend it within 30 days. This allows taxpayers to finalize their declarations after submission.
Additionally, a significant change this year is that spouses must now submit separate declarations, rather than filing jointly as in previous years.
The process also includes a new requirement for notaries to electronically file all relevant documents within 15 days of signing, which aims to enhance accuracy and efficiency. In cases where declarations require further verification, taxpayers must submit supporting documents electronically, unless the system has already retrieved them.
