Concerns are growing in Thessaloniki over reports that major low-cost carrier Ryanair may shut down its base at the Makedonia Airport from October, at the end of the summer season.
According to media reports, the potential move is linked to issues over charges and a renewal of operational agreements involving the carrier, which serves dozens of routes to and from Thessaloniki. Local stakeholders warn that such a development could deal a significant blow to tourism in the central Macedonia region, with official responses expected within the week.
So far, the airline has issued no official statement. However, reports suggest the possible decision may be connected to increased lease costs under an agreement involving the airport’s concession arrangements.
Meanwhile, the issue was discussed in an extraordinary working meeting convened by city officials, with participation from tourism officials, the regional administration, the Thessaloniki Tourism Organization and other services. A further meeting is expected later in the week.
Authorities said there was immediate contact with national tourism officials to coordinate handling of the issue. Following a request submitted earlier in the week, a virtual meeting has been scheduled with Ryanair management to clarify the company’s intentions and obtain formal information on the situation.
Separate correspondence was also sent to the airport operator requesting clarification on whether contractual terms with Ryanair have changed and whether any intentions by the airline have been formally communicated.
In addition, a letter was sent to the tourism ministry seeking updates on the developing situation.
