Retail Price Cuts Expand

Hundreds of products, from dairy and school supplies to fresh meat, have seen price cuts, with discounts reaching as high as 44% under a new retail initiative.

A nationwide initiative aimed at lowering prices across the Greek retail market is being rolled out by the Independent Authority for Market Oversight and Consumer Protection, in collaboration with the Ministry of Development and business organizations.

Official data show that more than one in five branded products included in the initiative now carries a double-digit price reduction. In total, 191 products have been discounted by at least 10%, 76 by at least 15%, 40 by more than 20%, and 11 by 30% or more.

The steepest price cut on the branded-products list reaches 44% for a selected item. Suppliers have reported an average price reduction of 6.6%, while the additional contribution of supermarket chains has pushed the average final discount to approximately 9%.

Dairy Leads the List
Dairy products and eggs account for one of the largest shares of discounted branded goods. The category, which includes milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs and other dairy products, features 143 items with an average reduction of 8.7%, while 55 products have been discounted by at least 10%.

The category recording the highest average reduction is sauces, mustard, mayonnaise and spreads, with average discounts of around 17.2%. Chocolates and confectionery have also seen notable price cuts, averaging 12.5%, with nine products reduced by more than 20%.

The largest product categories participating in the initiative are:
• Personal care: 146 products
• Dairy and eggs: 143
• Pasta, rice and legumes: 100
• Cleaning products and detergents: 77
• Processed meats: 72

School Supplies See Broad Discounts
School supplies have recorded some of the most widespread reductions ahead of the new academic year. 373 of 403 products—more than 90% of the list—are now at least 10% cheaper.

School bags, backpacks and pencil cases make up the largest segment, with 211 products, representing more than half of the discounted school-items list.

Fresh Meat Also Included
Fresh meat has also been included in the initiative, with more than one in four products recording double-digit reductions.

Chicken and poultry products account for the biggest share of discounted fresh meat, with around 56 products, followed by roughly 19 beef products, 16 pork products, and nine processed meat products.
