The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, and the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, signed an “official declaration of intent” on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Boston City Hall, reaffirming the strong ties that unite the two cities.
The two mayors discussed the challenges faced by modern cities, such as overtourism, the housing and climate crises, and emphasized the critical role of local government in areas like civil protection, cultural heritage management, primary healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Both cities committed to jointly drafting and signing an official Memorandum of Understanding in the coming period, which will outline specific goals, actions, and measurable outcomes in line with the agreed framework.

The Mayor of Athens presented Mayor Michelle Wu with the final framed piece from the commemorative collection celebrating the 150th anniversary of Athens City Hall. In return, the Mayor of Boston gifted Haris Doukas a Revere Cup, a symbol of Boston’s revolutionary roots. The inscription on the cup read:
“To the citizens of Athens, Greece, in honor of our shared democratic values, enduring friendship, and the everlasting love of knowledge that both our cities cherish.”
