President Nicos Christodoulides has described the resignation of his Chief of Staff, Charalambos Charalambous, as a “gesture of confidence and trust” amid public scrutiny over a controversial video alleging shadow campaign funding.
Christodoulides called on all relevant authorities to fully investigate the matter, with support from foreign states and the European Union, stressing that he approaches the issue with “absolute seriousness.” He also indicated that the involved agency may undergo restructuring, potentially being merged with the State Scholarships Foundation, assuring that students benefiting from its programs will not be affected.
Addressing political and public reactions, Christodoulides emphasized the importance of calm leadership during crises, noting that government accountability is to the Cypriot people and the implementation of its pre-election program. He denied any pressure was applied to Charalambous, reiterating that the resignation was voluntary and transparent.
On the disclosure of donor lists, Christodoulides confirmed it would proceed legally, “with clean hands and open cards.” He also commented on European Union warnings regarding hybrid threats, affirming that management of such issues remains the responsibility of state services, without executive interference.
The president concluded by reassuring the public of his ongoing presence and willingness to address matters openly, insisting that there is no reason for alarm regarding government actions or communications.
