Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27. The meeting will take place at the Maximos Mansion and will focus on issues concerning state-church relations.

More specifically, the agenda will include the succession of the late Archbishop Anastasios of Albania who recently passed, whose funeral will take place in the neighboring country this coming Thursday.

The two men are also expected to address the situation in Syria and how it affects the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. Athens has reiterated its readiness to offer its full support to the Patriarchate in Syria, stressing the importance of the new governing regime to respect all religious minorities.

On, her part, as reported, the Church of Greece has expressed its concern regarding the fate of the Patriarchate in Syria, following the recent developments in the country.

The Greek Prime Minister and the head of the Greek Orthodox Church, Ieronymos are also anticipated to touch upon more internal issues such as Church-State relations, revolving around property matters. The Church has been pressing for the fulfillment of a series of demands related to land use designations such as the payment of compensation for lands that had been allocated to the state for specific purposes but were never realized.

The Church’s request for tax relief on unused properties is also expected to be on the agenda, with the Church citing the high taxation it faces due to its extensive real estate holdings.
