Ruling New Democracy (ND) party continues to steadily and comfortably lead all political rivals in the latest opinion poll, released on Thursday, while showing a slight improvement from its previous showing in a poll conducted by the same firm.

The apparent fillip comes after a series of tax breaks announced by PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis last week in a state-of-the-economy and policy direction address to open an annual trade exhibition, although still rising cost-of-living continues to be considered as the number one problem facing the country, according to 56.6% of respondents in the poll. The latter was conducted by the firm Opinion Poll for the Action24 regional television station.

The brightest point in the specific opinion poll for the ruling party is that an apparent majority of respondents (52.3%) declared that they are satisfied, from mildly to greatly, from the ND government’s overall performance in its term so far.

That compares with 47% of respondents who said they are not satisfied, to any degree.

In terms of specific results, in an extrapolation of the responses, center-right ND is given 30.5% of the vote, followed in the distance by social democrat/socialist PASOK, at 14%.

Another two parties are above 10%, the left-wing and Euroskeptic Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom), and the right-wing and equally Euroskeptic Ellinikin Lysi (Greek Solution), at 11.7% and 11.5%, respectively.

Another four parties, two in Parliament at present, and another two without representation, are shown above 3%, the threshold in a general election (of valid votes) for entering the legislature.

On the question of “who is most suitable for prime minister”, the response “no one” comes in first with 31.8%, followed by incumbent Kyriakos Mitsotakis with 27.9%. PASOK president Nikos Androulakis lags far behind in second place, at 7.2%.

Besides the cost-of-living and inflation problem, the second issue plaguing respondents was economic growth, with the state of the public health system coming in third, at 14.1%.
