Μake us preferred on Google Two doctors have been charged with the felony offense of exposure resulting in death in connection with the death of popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis.
The prosecutor filed the charges jointly against the two doctors based on evidence contained in the preliminary investigation file. They have been referred to an investigating magistrate to give their statements and are expected to request additional time to prepare their defense before the judicial authorities decide on their further legal treatment.
The case concerns Mazonakis’ death at a private medical practice on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki, Athens, where he had gone for a scheduled plasmapheresis treatment.
Mazonakis family seeks further investigation
Mazonakis’ family has said it intends to participate in the criminal proceedings in order to establish the full circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Through their lawyer, Charalambos Lykoudis, the family has made clear that it plans to formally support the prosecution and request specific procedural actions, including lifting the confidentiality of the doctors’ communications.
The family also appointed a technical adviser from the outset, as permitted by law, to provide an independent assessment of the forensic findings.
Lykoudis said earlier that the family intends to seek an upgrade of the charges to homicide with possible intent.
Autopsy leaves cause of death undetermined
The forensic examination of Mazonakis’ body was completed shortly before noon, but did not provide a definitive answer on the cause of death.
Forensic experts have classified the cause of death as undetermined at this stage while they await the results of toxicological and histological examinations.
The examination lasted about two hours and will not continue Friday. A death certificate has already been issued so that arrangements for the singer’s burial can proceed.
Four forensic experts participated in the examination: Nikos Kalogrias, Kostas Kouvaris, Sotiris Bouzianis, who was appointed as a technical adviser by Mazonakis’ family, and Maria Geramani. According to the information available so far, the four experts did not disagree over the findings.
Myocardial ischemia identified
The forensic examination found that Mazonakis suffered myocardial ischemia.
The key question now is what caused the ischemia and what mechanism ultimately led to his death.
The toxicological and histological tests are expected to provide further information and complete the forensic assessment. According to current estimates, the laboratory results could take more than a month to be finalized.
