Who Got Richer? Greek Politicians’ Asset Filings Are Out

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias declared income exceeding €1.2 million and 18 properties across two countries; Alexis Tsipras received two apartments as a parental gift; Kyriakos Mitsotakis's wife sold a UK property for £724,216.

Greek politicians filed their annual asset declarations, known in Greece as “Pothen Esches”, which became public on Monday, with several entries drawing attention for notable transactions in 2024.

Among them:

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sold bonds worth €500,000, while his wife, Mareva, sold a 520-square-meter property in the United Kingdom for £724,216.

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis picked up a 40-square-meter property on the Cycladic island of Serifos for €120,000. Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the nationalist Greek Solution party, offloaded two houses in the northern Greek regions of Pella and Halkidiki, along with a pasture in Halkidiki. Dimhtrios Natsios, President of far-right political party Niki, bought two cars. Communist Party leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas reported no changes.

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras received two apartments in Dionyssos, a northern Athens suburb, as a parental gift, and inherited a 25% share of an 855-square-meter plot in Athamanio, Arta. Former prime minister Antonis Samaras reported nothing of note.

Also drawing attention was the filing of Stefanos Kasselakis, whos served as leader for Syriza until September 2024. Kasselakis reported $3,875,045 from the sale of mutual fund shares and $122,430 in income from foreign real estate, while continuing to carry loan obligations of $1,581,000. His husband, Tyler Macbeth, purchased a 246-square-meter apartment in the upscale Kolonaki neighborhood of central Athens for €1,826,416.

Independent MP and lawyer Pavlos Sarakis — counsel to protected witnesses in the Novartis pharmaceutical corruption case, one of Greece’s most politically charged investigations of recent years — reported establishing a real estate investment company, MEL SYL Investments Single-Member S.A., with initial capital of €6,000,000. His filings note that part of his wealth stems from the $18 million fee he received from the United States in connection with the case. He holds $5,130,000 and €1,000,000 in a Swiss bank, and his total income exceeds €650,000.

Afroditi Latinopoulou, president of the far-right nationalist party Foni Logikis  (Voice of Reason), had a notable year. In 2023 she declared just €3,000 in income and reported owning no assets, saying she lived in her grandmother’s home. A year later, now an MEP, her income exceeds €82,000 and she has acquired a 61-square-meter apartment in Thessaloniki as a parental gift.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias again reported in his asset declarations income exceeding €1.2 million and holds 18 properties across Greece and the United Kingdom. The Minister of Labor acquired three properties in the Athens suburb of Psychiko and two on the Cycladic island of Oia. Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou sold an apartment in the Athens district of Agios Dimitrios for €280,000, while former Attica Region governor Rena Dourou and her partner bought a plot of land in Pikermi for €300,000.
