Ferry operators are modifying Saturday’s afternoon and evening schedules following disruptions caused by strong northerly winds across Greece and the gradual improvement in weather conditions, as the country experiences the peak of its Aug. 15 holiday travel period.

Ferry services from the main port of Piraeus are operating normally, while the sailing ban at Rafina and Lavrio was lifted at 1 p.m., allowing services from the two Attica prefecture ports to gradually resume. The lifting of the restrictions is consistent with reports from the Coast Guard that ferry operations from Athens-area ports were returning to normal as winds eased, although operators continued to make schedule adjustments.

From Rafina, Fast Ferries announced that following the lifting of the sailing ban, the Fast Ferries Andros departed at 1:15 p.m. for Andros, Tinos, Mykonos and Paros, while the Aikaterini P. departed at 1 p.m. for Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos and Paros.

Seajets also announced a series of departures from Piraeus and Lavrio.

From Piraeus, the Worldchampion Jet departed at 11:30 a.m. for Paros, Naxos, Santorini and Heraklion. The Champion Jet 2 was scheduled to depart at 2 p.m. for Syros, Tinos and Mykonos, while the Eurochampion Jet was scheduled to leave at 3 p.m. for Syros, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini. The Champion Jet 1 was also scheduled to depart Piraeus at 3 p.m. for Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos and Milos.

From Lavrio, the Tera Jet 2 was scheduled to depart at 3 p.m. for Tinos and Mykonos, while the Superstar was scheduled to leave for Andros and Tinos.

The changes come after gale-force northerly winds affected large parts of the Aegean during the peak of the Aug. 15 travel exodus. Winds reached 8 to 9 Beaufort in parts of the Aegean, with gusts locally exceeding 100 km/h, disrupting ferry services from Rafina and Lavrio and prompting cancellations or alterations on some routes from Piraeus.

The weather situation has since begun to improve, allowing the sailing restrictions to be lifted and ferry operations to resume. Nevertheless, conditions remain sensitive to local wind strength, particularly across the Aegean, and individual sailings may still be altered or delayed.

Passengers are advised to check with their ferry companies and local port authorities for any further changes to departure times or routes before traveling.
