Athens has scored a major international accolade, with the Neos Kosmos district named the coolest neighborhood in Europe and ranked third in the world in Time Out’s latest global ranking.
The list features 40 neighborhoods from around the globe, compiled through evaluations by Time Out’s editors, who assessed criteria including food and entertainment, nightlife, local businesses, quality of life and sense of community.
Third in the world
Topping the global list was Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, followed by the seaside L’Ocean District in Rabat in second place.
Neos Kosmos claimed third place worldwide, making it the highest-ranking European entry on the list. Time Out described the neighborhood as “one of the city’s most exciting districts without losing its local character.”
A key landmark cited is the Onassis Foundation’s cultural center, the Onassis Stegi, while the area is also known for its wealth of bars, restaurants and cafés that give it a particularly vibrant urban character.
Europe’s top neighborhoods
In total, 13 of the 40 neighborhoods on the global list are in Europe, with three ranking in the overall top ten.
Glasgow’s Govanhill took the second-highest European spot, standing out, according to Time Out, for its multiculturalism, local entrepreneurship and lively community spirit.
Rome’s Esquilino rounds out Europe’s top three, a district where historic monuments, restaurants, galleries and contemporary wine bars coexist side by side.
