Athens taxi drivers will stage a six-hour strike on Thursday, January 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., following an announcement by the Athens Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) calling for a work stoppage.
The strike reflects SATA’s decision to escalate efforts to secure permission for taxis to use bus lanes while transporting passengers. The issue was discussed at a recent SATA council meeting, prompted by the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s proposed revisions to the Road Traffic Code (KOK), currently under public consultation.
As part of the strike, taxi drivers plan to gather at the intersection of Spyrou Patsi Street and Athinon Avenue at 9:30 a.m. They will then march to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to submit a resolution outlining their demands.
The Greek capital has nearly 14,000 taxis operating in the wider Attica area. Athens grapples with intense traffic congestion and a poorly designed grid plan. Greek commuters often experience extreme hassle whenever a Taxi strike is called in Athens by the SATA union.
