Authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions across Athens on Tuesday, March 24, and Wednesday, March 25, 2026, as the city prepares to host student and military parades marking the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.
On Tuesday, March 24, a student parade will bring temporary and rolling road closures beginning at 10:00 a.m., alongside a ban on stopping and parking from 6:00 a.m. until the end of events.
Major central routes will be affected, including Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue (toward Syntagma), Panepistimiou Street, Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, and key connecting roads. Traffic will also be halted along sections of Syngrou Avenue leading toward Syntagma Square, with restrictions extending to nearby side streets.
More extensive measures will be in place for the military parade on Wednesday, March 25. Restrictions will begin as early as 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, with phased road closures and parking bans continuing until the conclusion of celebrations on Wednesday. A wide network of streets in central Athens will be affected, including Achilleos, Lenorman, Marnis, Karolou, Kallirois, and routes around Karaiskaki Square.
Additional closures will be enforced from midday Tuesday through Wednesday evening on access roads to Lycabettus Hill. From early Wednesday morning, a broad perimeter in the city center will be sealed off, covering key avenues such as Vasilissis Sofias, Vasilissis Amalias, Panepistimiou, Stadiou, and Patission, as well as major hubs including Omonia Square and Syntagma Square.
Special restrictions will also apply around the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, where ceremonies will take place. Nearby streets—including Mitropoleos, Aiolou, and Ermou—will be closed to traffic and parking from early Wednesday.
Drivers are advised to avoid the city center, expect significant delays, and use alternative routes or public transportation during the two-day period.
