GEK TERNA has received the green light to proceed with studies and construction works designed to reduce traffic congestion on Attica Road, one of the main highways serving the Athens metropolitan area.

The company’s chairman and CEO, Georgios Peristeris, confirmed that the group has been instructed to immediately begin the necessary studies and proceed with the required interventions, with completion expected within 2026.

The project comes as daily traffic problems continue to affect Attica Road, particularly around the Metamorfosi interchange, where vehicle congestion has become a major issue during peak hours.

Changes planned at Metamorfosi interchange

The planned intervention focuses on improving traffic flow at the Metamorfosi interchange, specifically the entrance connecting to the Athens–Thessaloniki motorway toward Lamia.

The project includes separating the two entry streams currently merging into the motorway — the Airport–Lamia and Elefsina–Lamia routes — by creating independent access points. The aim is to prevent the bottleneck that contributes to congestion.

According to the plan, the changes are expected to more than double traffic capacity at the interchange and reduce delays during peak hours by at least 50%.

Wider plans to tackle Athens traffic

Speaking at GEK TERNA’s annual general shareholders’ meeting, Peristeris also addressed broader plans to improve traffic conditions across the Athens metropolitan area.

He described congestion as a serious problem requiring both immediate interventions and major infrastructure projects. Among the projects being examined are improvements at the triple interchange in Skaramangas, interventions on Kifissos Avenue, possible extensions of Attica Road, the Ilioupoli tunnel project, measures to improve traffic flow on Vouliagmenis Avenue, and a new route bypassing the wider metropolitan area through the Elefsina–Oinofyta road connection.

However, Peristeris noted that, apart from the Skaramangas interchange project, for which a contractor has already been selected, no timeline has been set for the implementation of the other projects.

He added that some of these projects had been included in the framework of “model proposals” but that no progress has yet been made through that process according to current legislation.
