A high-security incident at Domokos Prison has put a senior prison guard under investigation following the murder of a Greek lifer, Antonis Papadatos. The lifer was shot in a section of the prison formerly used as a guard station, and new evidence suggests the guard’s role may have been more involved than initially reported.

The guard, present at the scene, has provided two conflicting versions of events. In his first statement, he claimed he saw the shooter fire twice at Papadatos, but in a later account, he denied witnessing the shots while still acknowledging the murder occurred in his presence. These contradictions have raised serious questions for authorities.

Security camera footage shows the events unfolding on the afternoon of Sunday, February 16, 2026. The footage captures the perpetrator arriving at the victim’s cell, escorting him toward the former guard station, and meeting the guard along with another inmate. One minute before 7:00 p.m., two additional prison officers are seen moving quickly along the corridor.

The murdered inmate, a 43-year-old lifer, was shot three times at a blind spot out of camera range, with the guard standing only about a meter away. Questions remain about how the firearm bypassed metal detectors, which reportedly are sometimes nonfunctional according to inmate testimony.

The accused guard, who has insisted he had no involvement in the crime, had been responsible for teaching new correctional officers about prison security starting in June 2024. Witnesses also report that other individuals were present in the guard station at the time of the killing.
