A criminal organization accused of terrorizing rural communities in Crete for years has been dismantled following a major police operation that led to the arrest of six people.

According to investigators, the group operated as a self-styled authority in agricultural areas, using threats, intimidation and acts of retaliation to seize land, expand livestock activities and obtain substantial financial benefits through fraudulent claims for European Union subsidies.

The investigation, which lasted several months, found that the alleged operation had been active since at least 2021. Police say members targeted farmers and livestock breeders, pressuring them to surrender land while creating an atmosphere of fear across entire rural communities.

Allegations of Extortion and Retaliation

Authorities say the group resorted to intimidation and extortion to gain control of agricultural land. When victims resisted or filed complaints, investigators allege that the suspects responded with acts of revenge, including arson attacks and the destruction of crops and property.

Police have linked the group to extortion cases involving at least 40 landowners, the burning of a vehicle in May 2025 and extensive damage to agricultural holdings.

The financial impact has been significant. Damages to farmland are estimated to exceed €200,000, while members of the group and their relatives allegedly received €586,498.73 in unlawful European subsidies between 2021 and 2025 through false declarations related to livestock ownership.

Investigators described the suspects’ actions as aggressive and carried out with a sense of impunity.

Victims Describe Years of Intimidation

One alleged victim told authorities he was unable to access his property for five years after being driven away through threats. According to his testimony, every legal complaint he filed was followed by retaliation.

Police allege that in May 2025 suspects set fire to his son’s vehicle, causing damage estimated at €27,000. Investigators noted that the incident could have endangered human life.

The case file also includes testimony from a woman who claimed that after her father’s death, the accused occupied her family’s livestock facility and forced them off their property.

In another incident cited by investigators, a vineyard owner discovered in 2022 that around 400 vines had been cut after he refused to lease land. Months later, more than 130 olive trees were allegedly destroyed in what authorities believe was another act of retaliation.

More Victims May Yet Come Forward

The case assembled by Crete’s Organized Crime Unit contains statements from 40 alleged victims. However, authorities believe the true number could be higher, as some residents may have been too afraid to testify.

Among those arrested are three men, aged 43, 44 and 39, who are considered key members of the alleged organization. Six additional individuals are also named in the case file.

The principal suspects are expected to appear before judicial authorities on May 22, while the investigation into the full extent of the alleged criminal network remains ongoing.
