A fire broke out shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in the area of Markopoulo, east of Athens, mobilizing significant firefighting forces.
The blaze is burning within a waste storage facility, raising concerns over its possible spread to nearby agricultural land.
According to the Fire Service, 30 firefighters supported by 10 fire engines are currently battling the flames on the ground. Aerial reinforcements include four firefighting aircraft and one helicopter conducting water drops. Volunteers and local government crews are also assisting with earthmoving equipment in an effort to contain the fire.
Traffic Disruptions in the Area
Due to the fire, traffic restrictions have been implemented in the wider Markopoulo area. According to police, diversions are currently in place on Ippodromou Street, near the Church of the Archangels (Pammegiston Taxiarchon Dagla).
Authorities remain on high alert to prevent the fire from spreading further, as high winds and dry conditions continue to pose challenges to firefighting efforts.
