Serious clashes broke out at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) on Tuesday morning when the university’s Polytechnic School became the scene of a violent confrontation. An anarchist group forced their way onto the premises, triggering a brawl that prompted the immediate intervention of police.

Authorities are thoroughly reviewing security camera footage from the institution and collecting statements from eyewitnesses, with the goal of identifying and apprehending those responsible.

Seven Injured

The incident began shortly before 10:00 a.m., when an anarchist group armed with clubs stormed the Polytechnic School building. According to witness accounts, the attackers targeted members of the EAAK student faction, and during the confrontation extensive use of pepper spray was made, creating a suffocating atmosphere inside the building.

The toll of the clash was seven injured, all of whom were picked up by National Emergency Medical Service (EKAV) ambulances and transported to Papageorgiou Hospital with minor injuries. Doctors reported their condition as non-life-threatening.

MAT Riot Police Raid and Traffic Disruption

Riot police initially surrounded the Polytechnic School before units of the MAT (Mobile Police Units) entered the building to restore order and prevent any further escalation of violence.

The unrest spilled out onto surrounding streets, with police cutting off traffic on Egnatia Street at the level of the university. Vehicles were rerouted via 3rd of September Street, causing temporary gridlock in the city center.
