Emergency traffic measures will come into force across Greece at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, as authorities prepare for a mass exodus ahead of the Clean Monday long weekend.
The Greek Traffic Police are stepping up controls to ensure the safe movement of holiday travelers, with adverse weather conditions expected to complicate journeys. According to a new emergency bulletin issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, storms and strong winds are forecast, prompting heightened concern as large numbers of motorists take to the roads.
Extra measures will be implemented at sections of the national road network. Increased checks will also be carried out at major entry and exit points of cities, as well as at airports, ports, and intercity bus and train stations.
Particular emphasis will be placed on deploying mobile inspection units at alternating locations across the road network. Authorities say the aim is to detect and penalize dangerous violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol and excessive speeding.
Meanwhile, circulation bans will apply to trucks with a maximum permitted weight exceeding 3.5 tons. The restrictions will be in effect today from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and tomorrow from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Officials are urging drivers to strictly observe traffic regulations and exercise heightened caution to ensure safe travel throughout the holiday period.
