A large number of Greek regions will face a very high risk of wildfires on Thursday according to the country’s Fire Risk Forecast Map.
The Cyclades, Lesbos, Chios, Psara, Samos and Ikaria have been assigned Category 4, the second-highest level on the five-point fire danger scale. Parts of Attica and Evia are also included in the Category 4 zone.
A Category 3, or high fire risk, is forecast for several other areas across both the Greek mainland and islands.
Restrictions imposed in Evros
Parts of Evros will also be under Category 3 fire danger. The areas covered include the Alexandroupolis, Samothraki, Soufli and Didymoteicho Forest Districts.
In response, the deputy regional governor of Evros has ordered restrictions from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on access, movement and the presence of people and vehicles in several areas.
The restrictions cover reforested areas opposite the Makri Armed Forces Officers’ Club, the Sykorrachi recreation area in the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, the urban forest of Samothraki, and the Tsiggla reforestation and recreation area in Didymoteicho.
Violating the restrictions can result in a €300 administrative fine, according to the applicable law.
Authorities warn against fire-starting activities
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection is urging residents to avoid outdoor activities that could accidentally ignite fires.
Particular caution is advised when burning dry grass, branches or garden-cleaning waste, as well as when using equipment capable of producing sparks, including circular saws and welding devices.
Authorities also warn against using outdoor grills, smoking bees and discarding lit cigarettes.
The burning of agricultural fields remains prohibited throughout the fire season.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is urged to immediately contact the Fire Service at 199 and provide the most precise possible information about the location.
The Civil Protection authorities also advise the public to follow official self-protection guidance concerning the risk of forest fires.
