A former gynecologist convicted of the sexual abuse and rape of multiple patients has been released from prison pending his appeal, following a decision by a Greek appellate court.
The 70-year-old doctor had previously been sentenced to a total of 73 years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of offences involving 21 women who were his patients. He had been in custody since his conviction in early 2025.
The decision to release him was taken by the Mixed Jury Court of Appeals in the Dodecanese region, following a proposal by the court’s prosecutor. He will remain free until his appeal is heard later this year.
Strict conditions imposed
As part of the ruling, the court imposed strict conditions on his release. These include mandatory appearances at a police station twice a month and a ban on leaving the country.
The defendant has consistently denied all allegations, maintaining that the claims made against him are false. During earlier testimony, he insisted on his innocence in response to the accusations brought forward by multiple complainants.
Case began with initial complaint
The case first came to the attention of authorities after a complaint was filed in 2020 by a woman who alleged misconduct during medical treatment. Her report led to further allegations from additional women, eventually resulting in a total of 21 complaints being brought against the doctor.
The upcoming appeal hearing is scheduled for November, when the case will be reconsidered by the higher court.
