Greek authorities have introduced emergency restrictions across several parts of the country as an intense heatwave combines with elevated wildfire risk, forcing the temporary closure of forests, tourist sites and natural attractions.
Temperatures are expected to reach up to 41°C (106°F) in parts of the country, while officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day.
Forest access banned in Thessaloniki
Authorities have banned access to several forested areas around the northern city of Thessaloniki from 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday until 7:30 a.m. on Thursday due to a very high wildfire risk.
The restrictions apply to pedestrians and all vehicles in the Seyh Su suburban forest, as well as forest areas in Oraiokastro, Panorama and Thermi.
The measure was ordered after the region was placed under Category 4 wildfire risk, indicating a very high likelihood of forest fires.
Samaria Gorge to remain closed
On the island of Crete, the Samaria Gorge National Park will remain closed to visitors on Wednesday after authorities determined that forecast temperatures would exceed the safety limits for its operation.
The Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change said both entrances to the popular hiking destination will remain closed throughout the day because temperatures are expected to rise above 36°C.
Palace of Knossos closes after visitors collapse
The heatwave has also disrupted visits to one of Greece’s most famous archaeological sites.
The Palace of Knossos on Crete was temporarily closed after two visitors became unwell in temperatures reported to have reached 43°C (109°F).
A woman in her mid-50s lost consciousness and received first aid before being taken to hospital for precautionary examinations. Shortly afterwards, an elderly man also fell ill and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Following the incidents, the Ministry of Culture ordered the archaeological site to close from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. to protect both visitors and staff.
Temperatures to peak above 40°C
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, the heatwave is expected to peak with maximum temperatures of 40°C to 41°C across many mainland areas.
While most regions will remain sunny, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible in parts of northern Greece during the afternoon. Light African dust is also expected to affect western areas.
Forecast highs include:
- Mainland Greece: Up to 41°C.
- Macedonia and Thrace: Up to 39°C, with isolated afternoon storms.
- Western Greece: Up to 40°C.
- Cyclades and Crete: Up to 36°C.
- Eastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands: Up to 38°C.
- Athens: Up to 38°C.
- Thessaloniki: Up to 37°C.
Authorities have also warned of high levels of heat stress and advised the public to monitor weather updates and limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.
