A 17-year-old pupil who had been hospitalized in critical condition since Tuesday after jumping off the rooftop of an apartment building alongside a school mate has died, according to an announcement issued Thursday evening by the Athens-area hospital where she was being treated.
The terrible news marks the final chapter in a chilling tragedy that has shocked Greece and reignited public concern over adolescent mental health. The other victim, also 17, died shortly after falling.
“Today… at 19:54, the 17-year-old student who had been hospitalized in our ICU since May 12, 2026, lost her battle for life,” the KAT hospital announced in a statement, extending condolences to her family. The teenager had suffered severe cranial injuries, trauma to the liver and lungs, and multiple pelvic fractures after the fall from the six-storey building in the southeast Athens district of Ilioupoli.
The incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon when the two teenage girls — classmates and close friends — climbed to the rooftop of a residential building and jumped into the void. Police investigators say the girls had locked the rooftop door behind them, apparently preventing anyone from intervening and eliminating any immediate path of escape if they reconsidered at the last moment.
The incident has dominated headlines in Greece throughout the week, with local media focusing on growing concerns over depression, psychological distress and the mental health pressures facing adolescents. Earlier reporting cited diary entries and a note discovered by police suggesting both girls had been struggling with depression and emotional isolation.
Police continue to investigate whether additional factors may have contributed to the apparent suicide pact. Officers are examining the teenagers’ mobile phones, recent conversations and social media activity, while searches have also been conducted at their homes.
Particular attention has centered on testimony from teachers and classmates, many of whom reportedly told investigators that nothing in the girls’ behavior earlier that day indicated an impending tragedy.
The deaths have triggered renewed discussion in Greece over the state of youth mental health services, school counseling infrastructure and the psychological effects of social pressure, online exposure and post-pandemic anxiety among teenagers.
