The sister of 39-year-old Vasiliki, who was killed by her husband in a femicide case in Kalamata, Greece, is expected to take temporary custody of the couple’s two young children following the suspect’s pre-trial detention.
The children, aged 6 and 10, were reportedly in a nearby room at the family’s apartment at the time of the killing and were not aware of what had happened.
According to reports, the children left the hospital on Monday afternoon after a prosecutor granted custody to their aunt. The decision followed the detention of the 41-year-old man accused in the case.
Local representatives said that the Church and community organizations will support the aunt in her efforts to provide the children with a stable environment and help them rebuild their lives after the tragedy.
A statement attributed to a representative involved in the case welcomed the decision, saying the children’s aunt was considered the most suitable person to take responsibility for them with the necessary support.
The same statement also called for stronger social protection measures for abused or abandoned children, highlighting the need for continued support beyond cases that receive public attention.
The children had been receiving care at Kalamata Hospital, with praise also expressed for the medical staff for their handling of the case and their care for the minors.
