Greek citizens will be finally able – as of Tuesday (June 3) – to issue a personal ID number via the app myinfo.gov.gr, which will gradually replace several other identification numbers issued by individual agencies, such as police, the tax bureau, the public healthcare system, municipal registers etc.

The reform, ground-breaking by modern Greece’s bureaucratic standards, aims to improve the delivery of public services, as well as to address chronic gaps in the inter-connection of state agencies registers, which have resulted in decades of ingrained inconvenience to citizens and to boost efficiency.

The process of issuing the unified personal code was presented by relevant ministers and ministry officials on Tuesday, with the participation of the head of the independent tax bureau (AADE), Giorgos Pitsilis.

The new personal ID fulfills two main functions: it acts as a single identification number for a citizen’s transactions with the state, eliminating the need for multiple numbers. Secondly, the initiative aims to correct errors and inconsistencies resulting from the fragmentation and lack of inter-connectivity between public registers.

Until now, Greek citizens have had no less than four different identification numbers.
