Firefighting efforts remain in full force on the Greek island of Chios, as rekindled blazes have reignited concern across the region, which has suffer significant damage from the wildfire burning since Sunday.
Early on Thursday morning (June 26), a significant resurgence was reported in the mountainous zone north of Lithio village. The difficult terrain continues to challenge firefighters, especially around Trachili, where helicopters and other aerial units have been active over the past two days to prevent the fire from spreading further.
Nearly 48,000 Acres Burned
According to satellite data from the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service, the wildfire has scorched a total of 47,765 stremmata (approximately 11,800 acres). Of these, 38,500 stremmata were forest land, while the remaining 9,265 were agricultural or other types of terrain.
With no active fire fronts currently detected, these figures are believed to reflect the full extent of the damage caused by the blaze.
A woman working as a domestic helper has been arrested for arson in connection to one of the five fire fronts that erupted on the island. The woman, a Georgian national, reportedly admitted to throwing a lit cigarette onto the road, sparking a blaze. She was initially detained for questioning before confessing to her role in the fire.
