A mother has been arrested in the western Greek city of Patras after her seven-month-old baby was found to have serious injuries, including a femur fracture and head abrasions, raising concerns among medical staff about possible abuse.

The infant was taken to a children’s hospital in Patras, where doctors identified the injuries and immediately notified the authorities due to suspicions surrounding the circumstances. Such injuries in very young infants are considered highly unusual and typically trigger mandatory investigations.

Police detained the mother on Sunday on charges related to endangering a minor. She has claimed that the baby was accidentally injured after falling from a bed while she was preparing food for another child.

Medical officials and hospital representatives noted that fractures of this type in infants under one year old are generally treated as suspicious until proven otherwise, leading to standard child protection procedures being activated.
