Another particularly disturbing case of domestic violence emerged in south-central Greece this week, with police announcing the arrest of a 32-year-old man in the Oropos coastal district – north of Athens – following allegations of spousal rape, prolonged abuse and the distribution of content of an intimate nature without consent.

The suspect was arrested after his 31-year-old wife filed a complaint alleging that he raped her inside their home in the Agioi Apostoloi resort settlement of Oropos last Friday and that he recorded the assault. She also said he subsequently electronically distributed the footage to an unknown number of recipients.

The woman had reportedly visited police on previous occasions but withdrew her complaints each time.

The latest incident allegedly occurred Tuesday night, when the suspect, reportedly intoxicated, assaulted the woman again and recorded the attack. According to reports, he later uploaded the footage to social media with a caption mocking the victim. The couple’s 8-year-old son was reportedly present and witnessed the incident.

Police said the woman managed to leave the residence after the suspect fell sleep and sought help at the local police precinct, where she filed a formal complaint. Authorities subsequently launched a search operation and arrested the suspect.

Investigators said the man allegedly discarded his mobile phone in the sea before his arrest. However, digital evidence recovered during the investigation reportedly included videos depicting acts of abuse, some of which had been uploaded to social media platforms. Authorities also found sexually explicit videos and are examining whether any of that material was distributed online.

The suspect faces charges related to domestic violence, “revenge pornography” and violations of personal data protection laws.

The case comes amid heightened public concern over domestic violence in Greece, where authorities have reported a steady increase in complaints and arrests since the expansion of specialized response units, panic-button applications and dedicated support services for victims.
