The mayor of the Kassandra municipality in northern Greece has reportedly been irrevocably suspended for allowing the unlicenced operation of an amusement park in her municipality where a 19-year-old lost his life on a derailed ride.

Mayor Anastasia Halkia was found guilty of dereliction of duty by a local administration disciplinary board, a decision she appealed to the Council of State (CoS), Greece’s highest administrative court. The formal ruling by the CoS is expected to be published and delivered to the mayor on Monday.

Nineteen-year-old Yiannis Kabailis lost his life after a carnival ride collapsed.

A police and judicial investigation later discovered that the amusement park, set up in the Pefkohori coastal resort of Halkidiki prefecture, lacked proper licensing by the relevant municipality. Nevertheless, the municipality ignored its unlicensed operation.

In fact, Greek Police had warned the Kassandra municipality a month before the accident that the operation lacked necessary licensing.
