Norovirus Cases Decline at Athens’ Hospital

Greek health authorities say the recent cluster of norovirus-related gastroenteritis cases at Attikon Hospital is now clearly subsiding, with all affected patients reported to be symptom-free

Greek health authorities say the recent outbreak of gastroenteritis linked to norovirus at Attikon Hospital in Athens is now showing clear signs of decline.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the Ministry of Health said the Hospital Infections Committee’s intervention team assessed the epidemiological data and concluded that the cluster of cases is “in clear remission.”

According to the statement, a total of five new cases among hospitalized patients were recorded between May 25 and May 28, following the implementation of containment measures introduced and supervised by the hospital’s infection control committee. One of those cases involved a patient admitted during emergency duty on May 26.

Health officials said all affected patients were immediately placed in isolation in accordance with established medical protocols and are now symptom-free.

The hospital continues to apply the measures introduced on May 26, while monitoring the situation through daily epidemiological surveillance.

Authorities stressed that there is currently “no reason for concern” for patients, visitors or hospital staff, adding that the hospital is operating normally and safely.

The statement was signed by hospital administrator Spyridon Apostolopoulos and professors Spyridon Pournaras and Sotiris Tsiodras.
