Chaos appears to dominate the streets. Pedestrians walk while staring at their phones, distracted and paying little attention to traffic signals or oncoming vehicles. Although they do not have the right of way, many ignore the rules entirely, putting themselves in danger.
One pedestrian was seen crossing a major avenue diagonally at a point without a crosswalk or traffic lights, climbing over a dividing island and weaving between moving cars.
MEGA’s cameras recorded dozens of pedestrians crossing against red lights on Thiseos Avenue in just a few minutes, with cars in some cases stopping at the very last moment.
They may save a few seconds, but they also risk causing serious accidents, or even fatal crashes.

Despite the steady increase in pedestrian-related traffic accidents, many people continue to ignore Greece’s Highway Traffic Code.
In 2025 alone, 65 pedestrians across the country — 36 men and 29 women — lost their lives on the roads, while 69 others suffered serious injuries and 1,726 were lightly injured.
Although rarely enforced, the Greek Highway Traffic Code also provides for fines against pedestrians who violate red traffic signals, with penalties set at €30.
