A 50-year-old local man was killed in an ambush-style slaying on Friday in the Makryneia region of Aetoloakarnania prefecture of western Greece.

Another man, 44, was later arrested in the incident a day later, on Saturday morning.

According to reports, the victim was the president of the Lithovouni settlement in the area. He was shot at least three times in his vehicle by an assailant that was ostensibly waiting by the side of a rural roadway. Images of the victim’s vehicle show it as bullet ridden.

According to later information aired on Mega Channel, the two men allegedly had personal differences, which led to a heated exchange the previous day and an appointment to resolve them a day later. However, the perpetrator ambushed and shot the 50-year-old with a shotgun, killing him instantly.

Initially, passing drivers, seeing the victim’s car riddled with bullet holes, assumed it was a traffic accident and notified the police. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the 50-year-old dead in the driver’s seat with a shotgun next to him.

An investigation is continuing.
