Μake us preferred on Google A prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation into serious drinking water problems affecting communities in northern Greece after water in parts of the municipalities of Volvi and Sithonia was deemed unsafe for consumption.
The head of the Thessaloniki Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office ordered the inquiry into water quality issues in the settlement of Nymfopetra, in the Municipality of Volvi, as well as Trani Ammouda and Agios Nikolaos in the Municipality of Sithonia.
In Sithonia, water analyses commissioned by residents detected coliform bacteria and enterococci at concentrations exceeding the permitted limits, rendering the water unsafe to drink.
In the Municipality of Volvi, residents have been using bottled water for drinking and even cooking for several weeks because the public water supply has been declared unsuitable for consumption.
The investigation will focus on determining the causes of the water contamination and examining delays in the implementation of planned reverse osmosis treatment projects for the Volvi water network.
As part of the inquiry, the mayors of the affected municipalities and representatives of local residents’ committees have been called to provide testimony.
