Several road closures across Athens and the wider Attica region will be closed on Sunday, May 10, as the International Cycling Race “DEI Tour of Hellas 2026” reaches its final stage. The race began on May 6 in Ioannina and concludes with a route sweeping through central Athens and down the Attic coast all the way to Cape Sounion.

Road closures are in effect until 4:00 PM. Emergency vehicles and official race vehicles are exempt. Here’s what visitors need to know by area:

Central Athens — Expect significant disruption around Syntagma Square, Vassilisis Sofias, Vassilisis Amalias, Panepistimiou, and Syngrou Avenue from the early morning. These are key arteries connecting the historic center, so anyone traveling by car near the Acropolis, the National Gardens, or the Panathenaic Stadium should plan for delays or use the metro.

Piraeus — The waterfront road along Aktis Moutsopoulou and the surrounding area near the port will be closed until noon, which may affect passengers heading to or from ferries in the morning.

The Coastal Road (Poseidonos Avenue) — This is the most heavily impacted stretch for visitors. The popular seaside road running through Kallithea, Paleo Faliro, Alimos, Glyfada, and Vouliagmeni will see rolling closures from mid-morning into the early afternoon. Anyone planning a beach day along the Athenian Riviera should expect delays and consider heading out early or after 2:00 PM.

Southern Attica (toward Sounion) — The Athens–Sounion coastal highway will also be affected, with closures in sections running through Markopoulo, Saronikos, and Lavreotiki until 1:30 PM. Visitors planning to visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion should factor this in.
