The Municipality of Souli, in Epirus, northwestern Greece, has once again issued a stern warning to tourists and locals planning to cross the Acheron River Gorge from Glyki toward the river’s springs, as ongoing rockfalls continue to pose a serious safety risk.

The renewed alert comes in the wake of a dramatic incident on Sunday, when a large boulder detached and crashed violently into the riverbed — just a short distance from a group of hikers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to the municipality, such rockfalls occur regularly due to various natural causes. Even the passage of wild animals is sometimes enough to dislodge stones from the gorge walls, sending them tumbling into the river below.

To mitigate risks, the Municipality of Souli had already installed warning signs last year throughout the most dangerous sections of the trail, alerting visitors to the possibility of falling rocks.

Following Sunday’s incident, the municipality issued a fresh statement urging caution:
“The Municipality of Souli warns that crossing the Acheron Gorge is undertaken at the walkers’ own risk, as there is a heightened risk of rockfall. Citizens are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution.”

Hikers and visitors are encouraged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
