Schools Closed Across Greece for St. George’s Day

Local holidays in several municipalities keep classrooms shut as communities celebrate one of the country’s most widely honored saints

Thousands of students across Greece are enjoying a day off from school on Thursday, April 23, 2026, as local closures take effect in areas celebrating Saint George’s Day.

The closures apply to municipalities where Saint George is honored as a patron saint, leading to a suspension of classes across all education levels, including private tutoring centers, in those regions.

Areas affected by school closures

In the greater Athens area, schools remain closed in Elefsina, Kamatero, and Melissia.

Across the rest of the country, closures are in effect in several towns and regions, including:

  • Ierapetra,
  • Soufli,
  • Goumenissa in Kilkis,
  • Nemea,
  • Rio and Vasiliko in Achaia,
  • Neapoli in Ilia,
  • Gerakarou in Thessaloniki,
  • Eratyra and Neapoli in Kozani,
  • Vevi in Florina

As a result, students and teachers in the affected municipalities receive an additional day of rest before returning to regular school schedules following the Easter holiday period.
