Seismic activity continued unabated on Monday evening in a sea region of the southern Aegean roughly between the islands of Santorini, Ios, Amorgos and Anafi, with two tremors in the evening registering above 4 on the Richter scale. Numerous quakes registering as high as 4.9R have been recorded over the past 72 hours.
Civil defense units in the country are on standby and some have been transported to affected islands, while a noteworthy numbers of local residents and early season holiday-makers are leaving or have departed from well-known Santorini.
Specifically, on Monday evening a quake measuring 4.5R was recorded at 22.39 (20.39 GMT), pin-pointed at 20 kilometers south, southwest of the Arkesini site on the island of Amorgos and at a focal depth of 13 kilometers.
Roughly an hour later, at 22.19 (20.19 GMT), a quake measuring 4.8R was recorded, with the epicenter 18 kilometers from the same Arkesini site on Amorgos and at a focal depth of 13.9 kilometers – essentially from the same location as the previous and stronger quake.
